TV Shows: Slow Horses S4 E2

I so love this show for the many layers of each and every episode. So much so, I now watch them a second time because I know I probably missed something. Whether a snide remark that is a clue, to a shuffle of papers that will have repercussions, to the odd man out lurking in the background who looks like scenery dressing but is, in fact, so much more. As I am sure we will find out in subsequent episodes.

In A Stranger Comes to Town, we have the continuation of a couple of threads, and introduction of a couple more and, as we’ve come to expect, a thwarted Diana is not above setting the agenda no matter who her boss is. And is fixing the unfixable in her own immutable way. While Jackson, as ever, is already 4 steps ahead of everyone, not that we the view know it till he states the obvious. Then there’s River, off doing what River does, getting in the thick of it providing the energy and action of every episodes.

And then … we’re peeling away the layers of yet another cockup and long dormant revenge of someone hell bent on having his day.

So many clever subplots, so much snarky fun, including a priceless dressing down of First Desk, Claude Whelan’s plant in Jackson’s office, the interim office administrator, Moira Tregorian, who, horror of horrors, has cleaned Lamb’s office.

I can’t wait to see what happens to River in the next episode, and what else Diana might be up to now she knows about MI5’s involvement with the “cold body” identity of Robert Winters. And just exactly what Hugo Weaving’s character is up to.

Throw away lines:

“I can’t fucking be in there with it like that. Put it back how it was.”
“... he's a Joe in the field, and you don’t blow a Joe’s cover”
